The importance of Tradesman Insurance?

Firstly it does not matter how experienced or good a tradesman you are, accidents happen and that is the very reason we have Public Liability Insurance as part of a Tradesman Insurance Policy.  A tradesman insurance policy will protect:

  • You
  • Your Livelihood
  • Your Income

Without a proper policy in place you will lose potential contracts as many clients will require you to have PL Insurance in place before they let you carry out any work. It also lets people know you are legitimate and mean Business.

 Why do you need Public Liability Insurance?

PL as it is known is a necessity amongst tradesmen. If your business has contact with others in great numbers you have an increased risk of injury to person or damage to property. Dealing with members of the Public and not protecting your business from these risks is dangerous. If someone is injured (or worse) as a result of your alleged negligence, you may be forced to pay large sums to defend yourself against such allegations. Courts Costs (not to mention obstacles in actually getting yourself back to work) can be crippling!

Who can get Tradesmen Insurance?

Any trade can have this cover. Electricians, Plumbers, Roofers, Handymen, you name it! If you are working with the Public, then you can & SHOULD be insured. If you call any broker and tell them your trade & that you need insurance, they will talk you through it carefully and give you information on what you should consider. It is very common place for Tradesmen that are sole traders to have a Standard Policy in place that covers them for the bare minimum – Public Liability Insurance.

What will you be covered for under a Tradesman Insurance Policy?

There are standard features on a Tradesman Policy – such as Public Liability for example. However, you can choose to increase the amount of Public Liability you have on the Policy. This can range anywhere from £1,000,000 to £5,000,000 & with special circumstances you can even go as high as £10,000,000. You can normally add some additional cover, such as :

  • Employers Liability
  • Tools
  • Other Equipment
  • Plant & Machinery
  • Business Contents
  • Contractors All Risk

These are the main additional covers that can be added but this is not an exhaustive list. You are best discussing with your insurance broker to see what you will actually need.
